A major project to update three GP practice sites in North Bristol has reached a new milestone with the completion of refurbishments at Avonmouth Medical Centre.

Pioneer Medical Group was awarded £2.78 million from NHS England and NHS Improvement Estates and Technology Transformation Fund to develop the three sites it runs in Lawrence Weston, Bradgate and Avonmouth.

Pioneer Medical Group and NHS England and NHS Improvement, via the grant, have jointly funded the refurbishment of Avonmouth Medical Centre, with the rest being allocated for a new practice premises in Lawrence Weston and updates to the existing site at Bradgate.

The works at Avonmouth have expanded the practice across two floors and increased the number of consultation rooms.

The extra space means the site is now able to accommodate the care navigation team, admin team, the on call team which includes GPs, paramedics and care coordinators and other medical staff for the three sites, freeing up more space in the practices in Bradgate and Lawrence Weston for patient appointments. It also includes new teaching and training facilities for undergraduate medical students and trainee doctors.

Dr Simon Thornton, GP at Pioneer Medical Group said:

We’d like to thank the community for bearing with us while the work has been carried out. The clinical space is a lot better and feels a lot brighter and fresher and makes a real difference when you come in.

This is an exciting development that gives us much needed space to provide care for our patients, and to train the next generation of healthcare professionals that will continue to serve our population in the future.

Dr Geeta Iyer, Primary Care Provider Development Clinical Lead, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire CCG, welcomed the updates. She said:

It’s fantastic to see the refurbishments at Pioneer Medical Group reach this important milestone and I am sure these improvements will be of huge benefit to both staff and patients.

Ian Biggs, Director of Primary Care & Public Health at NHS England and Improvement said:

We are committed to supporting GPs to meet the health needs of local communities and we are really pleased that the Avonmouth community will benefit from these improvements for years to come.
