The local NHS has partnered with gyms across Bristol and South Gloucestershire to offer people with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee free access to a new tailored exercise course.

The ESCAPE pain course is an award-winning group education and tailored exercise programme, which has been clinically proven to benefit people with hip and knee osteoarthritis. The six-week programme will be delivered by gym instructors, who have received special training from NHS physios and community teams.

The programme is clinically proven to help improve symptoms for people with osteoarthritis of the hip and knee, help reduce the pain caused by their arthritis and improve their ability to carry out everyday tasks.

Dr David Peel, Local GP and Clinical Lead for Planned Care at Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, explains more about the course:

There is strong clinical evidence that exercise can be hugely beneficial for people with osteoarthritis, and we are delighted to be partnering with local gyms to offer this tailored course to help local people with this condition.

We know that exercise can strengthen the muscles around joints, which helps remove stress from the joints themselves. It can also reduce joint stiffness, build flexibility and endurance and improve your mood and self-esteem. The individualised approach in this course will also help to maximise the improvements for people involved.

The programme will help people with osteoarthritis to understand their condition by providing simple advice and taking them through a progressive programme of individual exercises. Delivering this in community venues supervised by exercise professionals will also help increase accessibility and provide opportunities for on-going support.
