  • Healthy Weston is Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group's (CCG) vision for joining up services for better care in Weston-super-Mare, Worle and surrounding areas. This includes the future for services at Weston General Hospital.

On 19 April 2018, the CCG provided an update on the progress made in Healthy Weston, looking at how existing services can work better together to provide more joined-up care for patients, and how some services could be delivered differently in the future to make this happen.

Since we published Healthy Weston: joining up services for better care in the Weston area in October 2017, we’ve spent nearly five months listening to the views of and working with many local people, patients, staff and other stakeholders to test and refine the ideas set out in the vision to improve health and care services.

We had an exceptional response from the local community: more than 1,300 people completed our Healthy Weston online survey and we held 46 meetings and workshops across the local area with local people, staff and other stakeholders taking part.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to give their views. A report produced by The Evidence Centre can be viewed below, providing an independent summary of all of the feedback we’ve received.

An independent summary report by The Evidence Centre of feedback the CCG has received through the Healthy Weston project.

We now have a number of ideas about how we can improve services – also called ‘service design’ ideas – that we will be developing further and considering in more detail.  It’s important to stress that these are not final proposals and no decisions to make significant permanent changes to the way services are delivered have been taken.

Over the coming months, we’ll continue our work to refine these ideas, test their feasibility and develop detailed proposals. These proposals will describe how we can organise services differently to deliver the Healthy Weston vision for joined-up care that is affordable, meets the changing needs of our population in a sustainable way for years to come and reflects the views of local people.

Where a proposal entails a significant change to the way services are currently organised and delivered, we’ll undertake a full public consultation.

We’ll provide a further update on progress on developing the Healthy Weston work during the summer and expect the next phase to be completed by autumn 2018.

Subject to confirmation of the detailed proposals and the outcome of any public consultation, changes to services to provide better joined-up care for patients will be implemented from spring 2019.

Healthy Weston - what's it about?

Healthy Weston is Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire CCG’s vision for joining up services for better care in Weston-super-Mare, Worle and surrounding areas. This includes the future for services at Weston General Hospital.

Published in October 2017, the Healthy Weston vision was developed by talking and listening to staff, stakeholders, patients, carers and the public about providing the best possible health and care services suitable for people’s needs and sustainable – for the long-term.

Local people’s current and future needs are changing, and Healthy Weston will help us to meet those needs. We know that there’s also an increasing and changing demand on our local health and social care services, and there are differences in health and people’s life chances depending on where you live across our area.

Delivering Healthy Weston will mean that we can support people to stay well, care for people closer to home in a joined-up way across different services, and when people do need specialist hospital treatment, to provide the highest quality care and then help patients get home again quickly, as soon as they are well enough.

Our work involves looking closely at how existing services are organised and delivered, how they could work together to provide better joined-up care for patients, and how some services could be delivered differently in the future.  This will also help ensure our services are both clinically and financially sustainable by making sure they can deliver to national quality standards and are affordable within the available funding.
